The shooting happened at about 1:40 a.m. when officers on patrol heard gunshots south of West 18th and Sassafras streets, police said this morning. Officers went to investigate and saw a car stopped on Sassafras Street at West 22nd Street that then drove off, Erie police Lt. Kirk Werner said.
A man who was in the middle of the street then tried to run but fell down, Werner said. The man, identified by police as Marco Davidson, no age or address available, had been shot in the right leg but told police he did not know who shot him, Werner said.
Davidson was taken to UPMC Hamot, where he was treated and later released, police said.
Officers recovered a handgun in the grass on the northwest corner of West 22nd and Sassafras streets. They recovered another gun from a car that was stopped at West 26th and Sassafras streets, Werner said.
The gun in the car was reported stolen in 2009, he said. A passenger in the car, 31-year-old Jermar Phillips, was taken into custody and waits arraignment today on receiving stolen property and carrying a firearm without a license.
