On Jan. 19, with a temperature of 16 degrees and two inches of newly fallen snow, I fell in my driveway, hitting my forehead. I was unable to stand up or retrieve my cell phone, which was in my pocket. Fortunately, my car keys that were in the other pocket activated the emergency flashers on my vehicle in the garage.

Craig Stoker, an Erie police officer who is my neighbor, noticed the flashing of the car lights from the curbside and, upon further investigation, saw that I was sprawled near the back door. He then assisted me into my home and called 911. After some tests and an overnight hospital stay, I returned home.

Due to Officer Stoker's alertness and actions, I am alive and able to thank him publicly. I feel that he saved my life. God bless you, Craig! Our Erie police should be very proud of one of their own.

The following information has been submitted from the Erie Alert Nomination Form:

Nominated Officer: Christopher Szoszorek
District: Erie City
Nominated By: lking@safeneterie.org
Reason for Nomination: A woman with a pfa disappeared from shelter last Saturday. With a lack of English language proficiency and some cognitive issues, we worried what her abuser, Michael Holmes , might do if he was the cause of her disappearance. We were holding the victim's money as she was preparing to leave shelter and go into an apartment. She called to arrange to come and get her money. We called the police who prepared to pick up Holmes. The victim arrived with two "guards", women who were to make sure the victim was returned to Holmes with the money. The entire EPD team gets special credit. They were efficient and responsive. Officer Szoszorek got high praise from the SafeNet staff. He was respectful of the victim and very knowledgeable of the control tactics used by serially abusive men. The victim suffered a lot during her kidnapping--rape, strangulation, death threats and repeated beatings. She is back in shelter and we will continue to work for a safety plan for her.
